Grant Elementary School’s Attendance Policy
Grant Elementary School is committed to a quality education aligned with Murray School District’s vision and goals. In order to help all students achieve, we believe that every child deserves to leave their elementary school career with the skills and knowledge necessary for them to be college and career ready. We love to see ALL students at school EVERY day. Students who are excessively late or absent from school are at risk of not being able to accomplish their educational goals.
Teachers pick up their students at 8:30 AM. Students must be in their classroom by 8:35 AM or they will be marked tardy and a “T” will show on their attendance report. Students arriving after 8:35 (12:15 PM Kindergarten (MTThF)/11:15 (W)) should come to the main office to get a tardy slip before going to class.
Please be aware that students who miss 3 or more hours of a school day will have an attendance mark that reflects an absence, as they have missed more than half of the instructional hours.
When a student is going to miss school for any reason, a parent or guardian MUST call or email the school secretary, Ms. Angie (801-264-7416, firstname.lastname@example.org). Please be sure to include the reason for the absence in your correspondence, as this affects how we mark our daily attendance. An absence must be excused within five (5) school days.
We understand that elementary school is often preferred over Junior High or High School to take family vacations during the school year. We support student and family activities; however, we ask that you understand the obligation that we have to help your child become college and career ready. Make up work can never replicate the instruction that your child would receive in class. It is our hope that we can work together to support all students and their instruction.
If a student will miss school because of a vacation, your child’s teacher and the school principal shall be informed in writing (via email or Vacation Request Form (also available in the front office) prior to your child’s absences. Please keep in mind that during a school year, a student may have up to seven (7) parent-excused absences for illness or other family circumstances (includes check-ins and check-outs) and an additional five (5) days of vacation leave. Additional vacation leave will be excused at the discretion of the school principal based on previous attendance and academic performance.
Quarterly report cards include a standard attendance category. Each quarter, every student will receive a separate citizenship mark based solely on attendance.
A doctor-excused absence or late arrival will not affect your child’s citizenship grade. If your child has an illness that warrants a doctor’s visit or if he/she arrives late due to a medical or dental appointment, PLEASE bring a medical note to school within five (5) days.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation of this policy. We are committed to your child’s success and look forward to our continued partnership!
